Emne

Relative to conventional treatments for treating water contaminated with pesticides, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals, nature-based solutions (NBS) are greener, more sustainable and often more economic solutions that may also increase biodiversity.

As part of the EU-funded UPWATER project, different NBS are being developed and tested in three case studies: Stengården (Denmark), Besòs (Spain) and Athens (Greece). The NBS tested in Stengården are moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) combined with biofilters, while in Besòs and Athens, the NBS are constructed wetlands.

In this meeting, the designs, removal efficiencies, technical challenges and treatment costs of the UPWATER NBS will be explained and compared to a conventional treatment using granulated activated carbon. A decision support tool, designed to choose between treatment options based on project-generated criteria, will be presented and discussed.

All presentations will be in English.

Program

  • Welcome by Martin Olsen
  • Introduction to subject and project Kai Bester, AU (5 min.)
  • Moving bed biofilms reactor in combination with a biofilter – basic design considerations and removal rates in the CS Stengården pilot Kai Bester, AU (15 min. + 5 min. questions)
  • Full-scale solution and cost estimation of MBBR with a biofilter Tiago Carvalho, TARH (10 min. + 5 min. questions)
  • Biochar based constructed wetland – design and removal rates in the CS Besòs Victor Matamoros, CSIC (10 min + 5 min).
  • Decision support tool for choosing between treatment options: method, criteria and criteria weighting Olivier Delmas, INERIS & Johanna Kruse, IWW (50 min. + 5 min. questions)
    • Method: introduction to multi criteria decision analysis which supports decision-making when there are multiple alternatives. To find the best alternative, criteria are defined and evaluated.
    • Criteria: introduction of the assessment criteria for treatment options. Discussion/question round on if any relevant criteria are missing or if some of the gathered criteria are not relevant.
    • Criteria weighting: Criteria can have different importance. In order to account for differences a live weighting of the criteria is done by the participants using the online tool mentimeter. The weighting will be the base for the development of a decision support tool that reflects the needs of Danish stakeholders.

The UPWATER project is funded under the European Union’s Horizon Cluster 6 Programme, Grant agreement No 101081807 project UPWATER (Understanding groundwater Pollution to protect and enhance WATERquality).
